430 stainless steels are a commercially important class of
materials, as they deliver much of the material-property range of
similar, higher-cost materials. This is a result of careful tuning
of the alloy to provide many of the beneficial properties of the
broader class, with minimal use of the highest-cost alloying
components such as nickel (at most, variants contain 0–0.75%). It
derives many of its beneficial properties from the 16–18% chromium
content. It is generally manufactured using a carbon arc furnace or
inductive furnace.
